Italian Seniors ‘Esercizio per Vita’ Exercise Program
In 2018 Co.As.It. (SA) launched the Italian Seniors ‘Esercizio per Vita’ Exercise Program in collaboration with The Society of St Hilarion Inc. Aged Care and the University of South Australia (School of Health Sciences).
The exercise program is tailored to the cultural and linguistic needs of ageing Italo-Australian community. The exercise program focuses on aerobic and strength training which has been shown to:
- Reduce cardiovascular disease onset
- Assist in known cardiovascular disease management
- Reduce mortality
- Reduce the risk of falls
- Reduce low back pain
- Improve mental wellbeing
- Improve body composition (namely increased bone density)
- Improve overall functional capacity and ability to complete activities of daily living.
Research has also shown that aerobic and strength based training can serve as an adjunct form of treatment in the management of arthritis, type II diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases.
It is our aim to ensure exercise programs continue to be run and remain accessible to the ageing Italo-Australian community in South Australia.
