Older Italians in South Australia
CO.AS.IT. SA Inc. (Italian Assistance Association) a Peak Body for the Australian Italian community in South Australia is pleased to present the 2011 Census data on Italian Born in South Australia (SA) which is split up into Local Government Areas (LGA) and by age. This breakdown gives a clear picture of the age and location of Italian born residing in South Australia. The data is obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011 census of population and housing in SA (pdf for download above). According to the data there are a total of 20,708 Italian born residing in the state. 13,070 or 63% are aged over 65 years of age.
The total number of Italian born has reduced by 7.8% (1,755) since the 2006 census and we will continue to see a steady decline in numbers as the older Italians pass away. The number of 65+ has increased by 5% (624) since the last census and this number will continue to increase dramatically in the coming years as the majority of Italian born are within the 55-64 years age range.
